Tirumala, August 24, 2026: The three-day annual Pavitrotsavams entered their second day at Tirumala on Monday with sacred rituals and the offering of colourful Pavitra Malas to the presiding and processional deities.
Snapana Tirumanjanam and Pavitra Mala Samarpana
In the early morning, Snapana Tirumanjanam was performed to the processional deities of Sri Malayappa Swamy, Sri Devi and Bhu Devi.
Following the Abhishekam, sacred Pavitra Malas were ceremonially adorned on the Utsava deities.
Historical Significance of Pavitrotsavams
The Pavitrotsavams are also known as Sarva Doshopansamana Utsavam, or the festival for removal of all doshas.
The tradition was prevalent during the 15th and 16th centuries and was reinstated by TTD in 1962.
These festivals are considered purification rituals and are also referred to as Dosha Nivarana, Sarva Yagna Phalaprada, Sarva Kamaprada and Sarva Tustikara Utsavam.
Sacred Pavitra Malas
The Pavitra Malas are woven from pure silk threads in black or dark blue, green, yellow, red and white.
The sacred threads used for preparing the garlands are made from a high-grade cotton variety, according to the temple tradition.
TTD Officials Participate
Both the Senior and Junior Pontiffs of Tirumala, TTD Executive Officer Sri Muddada Ravi Chandra, Additional EO Sri Ch. Venkaiah Chowdary, Deputy EO Sri Lokanatham, temple staff and devotees were present during the sacred ceremonies.
