Tirumala, April 12–13, 2026 – The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has cleared a major revamp of the Alipiri toll gate, including a dedicated 1‑km cargo lane and a re‑designed 11‑lane layout, as part of a broader modernisation drive to ease congestion and tighten security at one of Tirumala’s busiest entry points.
What changes are planned?

11‑lane check‑post: The redesigned Alipiri check post will have 11 lanes, the first 2 lanes reserved exclusively for cargo vehicles; the remaining 9 lanes will handle general four‑wheelers and two‑wheelers, making clearance faster for pilgrims.

Dedicated cargo corridor: The new 1‑km cargo lane will extend from the current check‑post up to the Vinayaka temple (about 650 metres ahead), separating freight traffic from passenger vehicles and reducing the chaotic “pile‑up” at the gate.

Scalable design: The layout is planned to allow 2 more lanes in the future, reflecting TTD’s long‑term vision for traffic growth on the Tirumala ghat road.
Security and screening upgrades

Cargo‑scanner relocation: The existing cargo scanners near Bhudevi Complex will be shifted to Alipiri, integrating freight‑vehicle checks into the revamped toll‑gate system.

Advanced equipment: TTD is procuring door‑framed metal detectors (DFMDs), vehicle scanners, human scanners, and luggage scanners; 3 DFMDs are already in trial use, with 3 more DFMDs and 2 extra metal detectors expected by end‑April and luggage scanners planned for May.

Future “green scanners”: Tenders and expressions of interest are being floated for vehicle scanners and “green scanners” to check devotees seated inside cars, mimicking an airport‑style screening hub at Alipiri.
Why this matters for pilgrims

Traffic: The current Alipiri check‑post handles about 10,000 vehicles daily, rising to a peak of 14,830 vehicles in a single day during festivals like Ratha Sapthami; the 11‑lane + cargo‑lane plan is expected to sharply cut waiting times and random grid‑locks.

Safety & comfort: With better‑segregated lanes, faster scanning, and reduced vehicle‑clustering, the project will enhance security, air‑flow, and crowd‑management for pilgrims starting their journey up the hill from Alipiri.
Chief Vigilance and Security Officer (CVSO) Murali Krishna has indicated that the full check‑post modernisation will follow once the cargo lane is completed, turning Alipiri into a high‑throughput, integrated security and traffic‑management node for Tirumala.
