Tirumala, October 2, 2026: The great Srivaishnava saint and scholar Bhagavad Ramanujacharya is traditionally regarded as one of the influential figures in shaping the ritual, administrative and devotional traditions associated with the Tirumala temple.

The four concentric Mada Veedhis surrounding the Tirumala shrine are not merely streets for temple processions. They form an important spiritual and ceremonial framework through which several traditions associated with Sri Venkateswara Swamy continue to be observed.

Ramanujacharya's influence is associated with temple rituals, festival traditions, religious administration, devotional practices and the preservation of Sri Vaishnava customs.

Ramanujacharya and the Vision for Tirumala Brahmotsavam

Historical traditions state that the annual Brahmotsavam of Lord Venkateswara was once associated with Tiruchanur.

Ramanujacharya is traditionally credited with envisioning the organisation of grand processions around the Tirumala shrine through the four Mada Veedhis.

The movement of the Utsava Murthy through these sacred streets, allowing devotees to receive darshan, gradually became an important feature of the Tirumala Brahmotsavam tradition.

Even today, several Vahana Sevas, processions and festival rituals are conducted through the Mada Veedhis during the annual Brahmotsavams.

The Jeeyar System and Preservation of Temple Traditions

One of the important institutional traditions associated with Ramanujacharya is the Jeeyar system.

Jeeyars, regarded as spiritual preceptors, have traditionally played an important role in safeguarding temple customs and religious practices.

The Venkatanatha Shathagopa Yati Mutt, popularly known as the Jeeyar Mutt, is associated with the religious traditions of Tirumala.

Through such systems, the continuity of temple rituals and prescribed religious practices has been maintained over generations.

Divya Prabandham and Devotional Traditions

Ramanujacharya's legacy is also associated with strengthening devotional practices connected with the Alwars' Divya Prabandham.

The recitation of numerous Pasurams dedicated to Sri Venkateswara forms an important part of the devotional atmosphere surrounding the temple.

The tradition of according Purna Kumbha Swagatham to spiritual heads, Jeeyars and sannyasis, along with the offering of Theertham, Prasadam and Shesha Vastram, is also associated with the established temple customs.

Several festivals and devotional observances, including Goda Kalyanam, Tanneerimudu Utsavam and Bhag Savari Utsavam, are also associated with this broader religious tradition.

Ramanujacharya and the Legacy of Annaprasadam

Providing sacred food to devotees has always been an important aspect of temple culture.

Ramanujacharya is traditionally associated with placing strong emphasis on Annaprasadam and temple food traditions, with offerings to Sri Venkateswara being prepared according to prescribed Sri Vaishnava culinary customs.

Traditional offerings associated with Tirumala include:

These offerings represent the combination of devotion, ritual discipline and nourishment that continues to define the temple's Naivedyam traditions.

Installation of Sacred Deities

Ramanujacharya's traditional association with Tirumala also extends to the installation and establishment of several sacred forms within the temple complex.

Sita Devi

According to tradition, noticing the absence of a Sita Devi Archa Murthy, Ramanujacharya is said to have commissioned a Panchaloha idol of Sita Devi and established it at Tirumala. The tradition also connects this with the performance of Sita Rama Kalyanam.

Yoga Narasimha Swamy

Ramanujacharya is also associated with the establishment of the Yoga Narasimha Swamy shrine near Swami Pushkarini. Tradition states that a Narasimha idol was identified at the location and a Mandapam was subsequently established.

Bhudevi at Poola Bavi

Another traditional account connects Ramanujacharya with the installation of Bhudevi at Poola Bavi, based on an episode described in the Varaha Purana involving King Tondaman and the divine presence of Sridevi and Bhudevi.

A Legacy That Continues Across Tirumala

Although centuries have passed and temple administration has evolved considerably, many Agama traditions, Kainkaryams, devotional practices and ceremonial frameworks continue across the Tirumala, Tirupati and Tiruchanur temples.

The continuing observance of these traditions demonstrates the lasting influence of the spiritual and institutional systems associated with the Srivaishnava tradition.

Four Mada Veedhis Receive Vedic Names

As part of a recent initiative to honour the spiritual heritage associated with Tirumala and Sri Venkateswara, the four traditional Mada Veedhis have been given names associated with the four Vedas:

The courtyard facing the main temple has also been named Sri Ramanujacharya Pranganam, commemorating the saint's enduring association with the religious and spiritual traditions of Tirumala.

A Thousand-Year Spiritual Legacy

The story of Tirumala is not limited to its magnificent temple structure. Its identity has been shaped by generations of saints, Acharyas, rulers, priests, devotees and temple administrators.

Among them, Sri Ramanujacharya occupies a significant place in the traditional history of Tirumala, particularly through the rituals, devotional practices, temple customs and institutional traditions associated with his legacy.

The sacred Mada Veedhis, Brahmotsavam processions, devotional recitations, temple offerings and religious customs together continue to preserve the spiritual character of Tirumala for generations of devotees.
