Tirumala, October 4, 2026: Beside the world-famous hill shrine of Sri Venkateswara Swamy at Tirumala lies the sacred Swami Pushkarini, a temple tank deeply revered by devotees as the “waters of heaven.”

According to tradition, Swami Pushkarini originated from the lotus feet of Sri Maha Vishnu and was sanctified by Lord Brahma. For devotees, it is not merely a temple tank but a sacred presence associated with the divine glory of Tirumala.

A Sacred Lake Brought from Vaikuntha

According to legend, Garuda brought Swami Pushkarini from Vaikuntha to Tirumala as a sporting lake for the deities.

Because of this divine association, the Pushkarini holds a unique place in the spiritual traditions of the Tirumala temple.

Its greatness is described in several sacred texts, including the Varaha Purana, Padma Purana, Markandeya Purana, Vamana Purana, Skanda Purana, Brahma Purana and Bhavishyottara Purana.

Devotees traditionally regard Swami Pushkarini as the fountainhead of sacred rivers, including the holy Ganga.

Ancient History of Swami Pushkarini

Spread across nearly one and a half acres, Swami Pushkarini combines centuries of history with deep religious faith.

At the centre of the sacred tank stands the Neerali Mandapam, which was constructed in 1468 by Saluva Narasimha Raya of the Vijayanagara dynasty.

Historical inscriptions dating back to the 12th century also record worship and harathi being performed at the Pushkarini, demonstrating the antiquity of its religious significance.

Daily Harathi to Swami Pushkarini

Swami Pushkarini continues to be an integral part of Tirumala's daily spiritual traditions.

Every evening, after the Sahasra Deepalankara Seva, priests offer harathi to Swami Pushkarini.

The ritual assumes even greater significance during the annual Srivari Brahmotsavams. During the festival, harathi is performed in the morning and evening before the vahana sevas.

TTD Maintains the Sacred Pushkarini

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) takes measures to maintain the cleanliness and freshness of Swami Pushkarini.

Filtration systems and periodic refilling are used as part of the maintenance arrangements. According to the historical account, these arrangements were first introduced by TTD in 1972.

A Meeting Place of Sacred Theerthas

Swami Pushkarini is traditionally believed to be a sacred confluence of numerous theerthas.

The Galava, Markandeya, Agneya, Dhanada, Saraswati, Yamya, Vayu, Varuna and Vasishtha Theerthas are traditionally associated with the Pushkarini.

This belief further enhances the spiritual importance of the sacred tank among devotees visiting Tirumala.

Sacred Bath on Margasira Shukla Dwadasi

According to traditional belief, Margasira Shukla Dwadasi holds special significance for Swami Pushkarini.

At sunrise on this sacred day, countless theerthas are believed to enter the Pushkarini. Devotees believe that taking a holy dip in its waters on this occasion provides spiritual purification and cleanses them of sins.

A Living Symbol of Tirumala's Spiritual Heritage

From its association with Vaikuntha and Sri Maha Vishnu to its centuries-old inscriptions, rituals and sacred traditions, Swami Pushkarini remains one of the most revered spiritual landmarks of Tirumala.

The sacred tank continues to connect devotion, mythology, history and temple tradition, making it an inseparable part of the spiritual experience of pilgrims visiting the abode of Lord Venkateswara.
